I use ethnography and anthropological theory to rethink established ideas and approaches towards sustainability. My work is grounded in my research in Amazonian indigenous ethnology, global forest governance, conservation and environmentalism, and the (cosmo-)politics of human relationships with the living environment. I have worked on several projects in partnership with Vanessa Grotti, starting with my doctoral fieldwork in Amazonia, and resulting in three edited volumes:
Rethinking the Frontier in Amazonia and Siberia;
Animism in Rainforest and Tundra (both with Olga Ulturgasheva); and
Ownership and Nurture (with Carlos Fausto). Together with Jerome Lewis, I also co-curate the Palgrave book series Studies in the Anthropology of Sustainability, the founding volume of which was
The Anthropology of Sustainability: Beyond Development and Progress(2017). I am principal investigator of the European Research Council funded project, ‘The Hau of Finance: Impact Investing and the Globalization of Social and Environmental Sustainability’ (2019-24).
