Scientific research

The scientific research conducted by Giorgia Gatta, characterized by a multidisciplinary approach, focuses on historical and multi-temporal studies of the territory, at both big and small scales, by means of metric recovery of ancient cartography (and historical aerial photograms), thanks to geomatic techniques. Particular attention is given to digital acquisition, georeferencing, vectorization and implementation in GIS (Geographic Information System), aiming to both safeguard and metric utilization of this fundamental cultural and historical heritage.

National and international collaborations

The research takes advantage of national and international collaborations with both academic and non-academic environments.

Giorgia Gatta is (or was) member of the following commissions:

  • 2015-2019: ICA COMMISSION ON CARTOGRAPHIC HERITAGE INTO THE DIGITAL, about conservation and management of the cartographic heritage by means of digital techniques (http://cartography.web.auth.gr/ICA-Heritage/2015-2019/pg/Members.html)
  • 2008-oggi: Alma Heritage Science IRT (Integrated Research Team), a group of experts of the University of Bologna who study technology that can be applied to Cultural Heritage in several scientific fields
  • 2011: AIC (Italian Cartographic Association)

Giorgia Gatta participates (or participated) in the following research projects:

  • 2010-2014: research project Ritratti di città in un interno. Consolidare la memoria collettiva della città attraverso l’informatizzazione e la divulgazione della cartografia storica. Handled activities for dissemination of the scientific research

Giorgia Gatta handled several activities aimed to dissemination of her own research:

  • presentation of papers in national and international congresses; she is a steady contributor to the annual congresses Digital Approaches to Cartographic Heritage organized by the Commission on Digital Technologies in Cartographic Heritage, which has been a member since 2015;
  • conduction of seminaries, towards both citizens and students (high school or University students from Liceo Classico, Istituto Agrario, Istituto per Geometri, Degree course in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Degree course in Geography, Degree course in Cultural Heritage, Specialization School in Archeology);
  • organization of initiatives towards citizens, in the framework of projects coordinated by the University of Bologna: European Night of the Researchers 2016 and 2017 (financing: Horizon 2020, grant agreement n.722963), “I ricercatori parlano alla città” 2012 (financing: Fondazione del Monte di Bologna e Ravenna);
