Short Bio

Giorgia Aiello has been an Associate Professor in the Sociology of Culture and Communication at the University of Bologna since 2020. She is also Professor of Culture and Communication in the School of Media and Communication at the University of Leeds (UK), where she has worked since 2010. Her research focuses on the problems and potentials of visual communication in the construction and promotion of social, political and cultural identities in digital media, cities and everyday life. She has received multiple grants and awards for her research in the United States and the United Kingdom, and has held visiting fellowships at the New School for Public Engagement (New York, USA), the University of Antwerp (Belgium) and the University of Paris Nanterre (France). She also has been invited to serve on the editorial boards of a number of international journals focusing on communication, cultural studies, social semiotics and qualitative research. Her current research projects focus on the role of generic images in contemporary culture, stock photography and data visualization in digital journalism, and the visual-material dimensions of the urban built environment.
