Short Bio

Dr. Torta Gianluca is currently a co-founder of RarEarth (www.rarearth.it) and a doctoral candidate at the industrial chemistry department “Toso Montanari” at University of Bologna. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and technologies for the environment and materials and a master’s degree in Industrial Chemistry at University of Bologna, respectively in 2017 and 2019. He won a PhD scholarships in the PhD course “Future of the Earth, Climate Change and Societal Challenges” in 2020.

Torta’s research focus on the separation and recycling of critical metals from industrial and municipal waste. Currently he is working on the recycling of rare earth elements from NdFeB permanent magnets bearing waste. Other fields of interests are the recycling of precious metals from electric and electronic waste and other critical metals for the European Union. The aim of his research is to develop recycling methods to decrease the supply risk of the most critical metals for the European Union and the environmental impact of the in-use recycling methods.
