Italian speleologist FRANCESCO SAURO, with a Doctorate in geology at the University of Bologna, is fascinated by the table-top mountains of South America, the tepuis. This string of plateaus towering over the Brazilian and Venezuelan rainforest hide behind the dramatic landscape a “lost world” of extensive cave structures which harbor unique geological and biological features that have evolved in isolation over millennia. With nearly twenty year of caving activity, Sauro has participated in research in many cave systems all over the world, but keeps coming back to the tepuis, where he has led six expeditions since 2009. For the past years he has also been training astronauts.
