Francesco Saverio Leopardi works on the contemporary history of the Middle East and North Africa, with a focus on the Arab Mashreq. During his PhD in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, earned at the University of Edinburgh, his research focused on the history of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (1982-2007) in which he analyzed the role of subjective factors (political narrative and agency, internal contradictions, etc.) in the PFLP's process of marginalization and their interplay with objective factors (crisis of global Marxism, emergence of political Islam, etc.). As Research Fellow of the Department of Political and Social Sciences he is participating in the project "The Making of the Washington Consensus. Negotiating international assets, debts and power (1979-91)" coordinated by Dr Massimiliano Trentin and funded by Italian Ministry of Education and University Research (MIUR, Prin 2015).
