Short Bio

Donna R. Miller holds the Chair of English Linguistics at the Department of modern languages, literatures and cultures of the University of Bologna, where she coordinates its English Language Studies Program and heads the Department’s Centre for Linguistic-Cultural Studies (CeSLiC). Her research has largely focused, in a Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) perspective, on register analysis in institutional text types. Her corpus-assisted investigations have specifically explored the grammar of evaluation in terms of APPRAISAL SYSTEMS. Of late she has energetically taken up the defence of Ruqaiya Hasan’s model of ‘verbal art’, but has also been arguing for Jakobson’s place within it. Her current interests also extend to issues of Global Englishes.

Author of numerous publications, many by prestigious international publishers, she is involved in various national and international research projects as well as academic undertakings for the dissemination of SFL research findings.
