Donna Rose Miller

Retired Professor

Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna

Short Bio

Before retiring in July 2019, Prof. Miller held the Chair of English Linguistics at the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures of the University of Bologna and coordinated its English Language and Linguistics Studies Program. As an Alma Mater Professor, she still heads the Centre for Linguistic-Cultural Studies (CeSLiC) and participates in its research projects.

Author of many publications with prestigious international publishing houses, her research has largely focused, in a Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) perspective, on institutional text types. Her corpus-assisted investigations have regularly explored the grammar of evaluation in terms of appraisal systems. Of late she has energetically championed Hasan’s model of ‘verbal art’ (SSS), fine-tuned with Jakobson’s Grammatical Parallelism. Her current interests also comprise facilitating students’ verbal art literacy as well as monitoring the teaching practices designed to foster such competence.
