Short Bio

Cesarino Ruini is full Professor of History of Music I: Middle Ages and Renaissance and Musical Palaeography at the “Scuola di Lettere e Beni culturali ”, University of Bologna. He has done research, and has published widely on Medieval music treatises and the tradition of liturgical chants in the Latin church. Starting from his background in musicology, history and literature, Cesarino Ruini has investigated topics relating to the sources of theoretical reflection on music and the heritage of Gregorian chants in relation to performing practice. He has tried to emphasise the mutual influence between oral and written tradition as manifestations of a wider cultural context. Currently, he is member of the Editorial board of the “Saggiatore musicale” and general editor of "Le regole della musica", a series devoted to the translation with parallel text and commentary of the major medieval music tratises on behalf of the Publishing House SISMEL (Società Italiana per lo Studio del Medioevo Latino) of Florence.
