Lessons 3 and 4 – 14/15 October 2020

Homework for 21 October:

1. Read Dispensa page 13 (pdf page number. Also noted as page 12, handwritten at the bottom of the page). “ESSAY – WRITING AN INTRODUCTION”. Write your own introduction to the essay question, based on the notes given or using your own ideas. We will look at some of your examples in class.

2. Dispensa page 31 (pdf page number. Also noted as page 30, handwritten at the bottom of the page). “Linking words in formal writing”. Read and do the exercise.

Ex 3 Answers:

Contrast = whether, whereas

Condition = provided, as long as

Adding information = Nor (*inversion is required if you start with nor)

Examples –

The hotel isn’t luxurious and it isn’t basic. The hotel isn’t luxurious, nor is it basic…. (= The hotel isn’t luxurious BUT it isn’t basic EITHER. )

The food was fantastic and the weather was fantastic too. The food was fantastic, as was the weather. (= The food was fantastic AND SO WAS the weather.)

1. They didn’t hate the holiday and they didn’t love it. They didn’t hate the holiday, nor…did they love it.

Note that Although and Despite have different rules!

Despite ……….being rich/her wealth , she lives in a caravan.

It was raining heavily but we set off up the mountain.

Although…….it was raining heavily, we set off up the mountain.

Despite……the heavy rain / the fact that it was raining heavily, we set off… (NOT “despite raining heavily” because there are 2 different subjects).
