Curriculum vitae

Carlo A. Borghi received his M.S. degree in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy, in 1976 and his PhD in Technical Sciences from the Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven, The Netherlands, in 1982.

In February 1983 he joined the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Bologna as researcher. In the year 1987 he became associate professor and from 2000 he is full professor, in the field of Electrical Engineering (SSD: Ing-Ind 31).

The teaching activity is carried out at the School of Engineering, formerly Faculty of Engineering, of the University of Bologna, Department of Electrical, Electronic, and Information Engineering “G. Marconi”. The main activity regards courses for the bachelor, the master and the Ph.D. degrees in the sectors of Electrical Engineering, Electrodynamics and Magneto-Fluid Dynamics, and Plasma Technologies. Actually he is a member of the Doctorate in Health and Technology of the University of Bologna. He also held the course “Electrical Circuits” for the Automation Engineering Degree at the Tongji University of Shanghai in the academic years between 2009 and 2019. This was in the frame of an international cooperation project between the University of Bologna and the Tongji University. He was responsible of many PhD students some of whom become members of the academic staff of the University.

The research activity of Prof. Borghi is related to Plasma Engineering, Applied Magneto-Fluid Dynamics and Electro-Fluid Dynamics, Applications of Plasmas to Biology and Bio-Medicine, Theory and Applications of Electromagnetic Fields. His research activity initiated at the Faculty of Engineering of Bologna in the magneto-fluid dynamic energy conversion and plasma engineering. From March 1978 to October 1982 he was doing research activity at the Division Direct Energy Conversion of the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Technological University of Eindhoven (NL). He has done experimental activities and experimental data interpretations mostly in the field of Plasma Engineering, theoretical studies, modelling, and numerical activities with numerical solutions of direct and inverse-optimization problems of electromagnetism, magnetohydrodynamics, and plasma-dynamics. Actually he works on medical applications of plasmas. The results of his researches are reported in more than 200 publications of which he is author or co-author.

He has been responsible of many national and international research projects (CNR, MIUR, ASI, ESA), and research contracts with several entities (ENEA, ALTA, Alenia-Aermacchi and others). He has co-operated with many national and international research institutions. He has been responsible of national and international research projects. He has been referee for national and international research projects and reviewer of international journals.

Prof. Borghi had been Director of the Department of Electrical Engineering till its confluence in the Department of Electrical, Electronic, and Information Engineering of the University of Bologna, of which now he was Deputy Director. He currently coordinates the DEI Research Quality Working Group.

He is a member of the Board of Directors, vice-chairman and the treasurer of the International Liaison Group on Magnetohydrodynamic Energy Conversion. He is a member of the Technical Committee of AIAA Plasma Dynamics and Lasers (AIAA - American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics). He had been for several years secretary of the Technical Committee 25 - Quantities and Units - and chairman of the Technical Committee 1 - Terminology - of IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission). He represented IEC in the Comité Consultatif des Unitésof the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures. He has been the chairman of the Technical Committee 1/25 Terminology, quantities and Units of CEI (Comitato Elettrotecnico Italiano).
