25/07/1977 Degree in Medicine and Surgery obtained at the University of Bologna vote 110/110.
2/7/1980 Diploma of Specialist in Anesthesiology and Reanimation at the University of Bologna, points 70/70.
11/15/1985 Diploma of Specialist in Cardiology at the University of Bologna, 70 out of 70 and Lode points.
From 1/10/2006 to date Associate Professor of Anesthesia and Reanimation (confirmed from 01/10/2009).
From 02/01/2014 to 02/01/2020 National qualification as full Professor.
He has carried out and carries out research on the techniques of:
- pain therapy techniques (sciatica, cruralgia, low back pain, back pain, neck pain, cervicobrachialgia, radiculitis, knee and hip pain, especially if related to arthrosis and / or overweight or obesity);
- phantom limb syndrome therapy;
- reduction of risks and complications in anaesthesia;
- antithromboembolic prophylaxis;
- Regional anesthesia and regional analgesia;
- blood saving techniques.
He has published over 300 papers on these topics, 218 of them extensively in impacted journal (107) (Impact Factor 208), indexed (51) or others or as a chapter of books, he has published 4 books on regional anesthesia and pain therapy. (2002, 2004 (10,000 copies), 2006, 2010) with the publisher Elsevier Masson. In more than 500 occasions he has been a speaker at national and international congres in Italy and abroad and for over 20 times he has been president of congresses and national and international courses.
He has been national coordinator of the following international protocols of research on new drugs for antithromboembolic prophylaxis: Record 3, ONYX 2, BMS CV185-047, SAVE Hip 2, EFC10342.
From 1995 to 1999 he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Italian Society of Hemaferesis and Autotransfusion. From 1996 to 2012 he is a member of the board of directors of the ESRA Italian Chapter. From 1 January 2007 to 31 December 2009 he was president of the ESRA (European Society of Regional Anesthesia) Italian chapter: in this capacity he represented Italy on the board of the ESRA. Since 2000 he is part of the Scientific Committee NATA (Network for Advancement of Transfusion Alternatives). From 1996 to 2001 he was in charge of the SIAARTI Study Group on Orthopedics in Anesthesia. From 2003 to 2013 he was the coordinator of the International Club on Anesthesia in Orthopedics.
At the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute in 1979 he introduced hemodilution, in 1984 the intraoperative recovery and in 1985 (first in the world) the postoperative recovery, in 1992 the regional analgesia, first in hospital and later also at home (since 1999 ); in 2004 he developed therapy for the healing of the phantom limb syndrome and in 2006 a new therapy able to lead to rapid resolution of acute, subacute and chronic lumbosciatalgia. His commitment to this has helped make the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute at the forefront of the world in the field of blood savings, anesthesia and regional analgesia and in pain therapy.
