Curriculum vitae

Alessio Caporali is a PhD candidate at the University of Bologna, Italy. Before, he received B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Automation Engineering from the University of Bologna in 2017 and 2019 respectively. In 2020, prior to joining the doctoral program, Alessio was the recipient of a research grant at the Laboratory of Automation and Robotics of the University of Bologna working on the perception and manipulation of deformable objects. His research interest focus on computer vision and machine learning techniques applied to robotics for the perception and manipulation of deformable objects like cables, ropes, tubes, clothes and towels. In the context of his research, Alessio is actively involved in the European funded project REMODEL, where he is responsible for developing methods concerning the sensing of deformable linear objects for industrial applications.

During his university studies, Alessio was the beneficiary of a one-year scholarship for the AlmaTong project and spent the academic year 2015/2016 of his bachelor degree at Tongji University, Shanghai (China). Following his undergraduate studies, Alessio was the recipient of several awards and grants. In 2021, he received the Best Student Paper Award at the 2021 4th IEEE International Conference on Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems (ICPS). More recently, he was also the recipient of a short-term research grant from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) institution where he was a visiting PhD student at the Technische Universität München (TUM), Munchen, Germany (March 2022).

Since the academic year 2020/2021, Alessio is also a Teaching Assistant for the course “Automation Software and Design Patterns” for the Master degree in Automation Engineering.
