41858 - Embedded systems (Graduate Course)

Academic Year 2008/2009

  • Docente: Bruno Riccò
  • Credits: 6
  • SSD: ING-INF/01
  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LS) in Electronic Engineering (cod. 0233)

Learning outcomes

The Course aims at providing an overall view (form a "system point of view") of the realization and applications of embedded systems.

The Course offers also a "framework" for more specialized subjects, such as, for instance, hardware- software co-design, high security systems, virtual instrumentation,...

 The course allows to achieve the following main know-how:

a) comparative evaluation of the different possibilities to realize embedded systems (depending on market requirements and applications);

b) evaluations of costs, development times and risks in the realization of embedded systems;

c) components and technologies of embedded systems.

Course contents

  • Embedded systems and their applications (electronics everywhere)

  • Metrics of embedded systems (cost, performance, power consumption, time-to-market, product lifetime,...)

  • Components of embedded systems (processors, memories, peripherals, ...)

  • Realization of embedded systems (with standard PCBs, standard components, synthesized processors, FPGA , ASICs, ...)

  • PCB technologies

  • Simulation, emulation, rapid prototyping

  • Testing and certification

  • Examples of realizations optimized for different applications

  • Analysis of development costs and times

  • Lab work on specific realizations
