Conoscenze e abilità da conseguire

The course offers students an understanding of theories, methodologies and tools of urban and regional planning. It examines planning across diverse contexts and scales, and it focuses in particular on the analysis and planning in, and for, towns, cities, and urban regions in Italy. The course deepens methods for building the necessary knowledge of territorial systems and their functioning and consequently the contents of spatial plans, policies and projects, understanding the governance and actors involved, assessing the institutional conditions of spatial interventions and understanding spatial planning challenges in an international context.

Contenuti

The contents of the course focus on the analysis of urban and territorial systems, offering to students theories, methodologies and tools for analysing and planning urban areas.


The program is structured in three main blocks:

  1. Theoretical Foundations
    - to learn theoretical approaches and models of urban planning and development
    - to reconstruct the evolution of the discipline over time
    - to discuss planning levels and instruments, their role and application
    - to understand the basics of urban and territorial studies


  2. Elements of analysis:
    - to understand what it means to analyze urban and territorial systems
    - to discuss the different elements that make up and shape cities
    to reflect on cities and territories as complex system


  3. Tools & Techniques:
    - test alternative mapping techniques
    - learn new spatial analysis software (GIS – Geographic Information System)
    - learn how to measure urban standards and indices
    - understand how to read, interpret and create maps and other cartographic materials

  • History of Urbanism/Urban Planning
  • Theories and models of city between XIX-XX century
  • Regulatory planning
  • Strategic planning
  • Levels and tools of urban planning in Italy
  • Cartography and maps, alternative mapping
  • The city and territory as complex systems
  • Analysis of morphological, functional and social dimensions of the city
  • Data collection (methods & tools), Geographic Information Systems
  • Infrastructures, transport planning and sustainable mobility
  • Urban requalification, urban regeneration and contemporary challenges
  • Social inclusion and the role of citizens in planning
  • Analysis of perceptual dimensions of the city
  • Urban indices and parameters

Slide will be distributed to students as main reference material.

Specific content will be shared through from scientific articles.

Additional material will be provided to the students such as books, media article or podcasts.

Metodi didattici

The course will be conducted with theoretical lectures, classroom workshops and practical exercises, and guest seminars. Theories, methodologies and tools of urban analysis and planning will be complemented by the presentation of plans/projects and discussion of cases and best practices.

Practical exercises in class will support peer to peer learning and exchange among students, exploring interactive and non-formal education methods.

Modalità di verifica e valutazione dell'apprendimento

There will be a written exam at the end of the course, comprising 10 multiple-choices questions, 1 exercise and 2 open questions.

Evaluation criteria:

10 multiple-choices questions. A correct answer will give you +2 points, a wrong answer will give –1 point. If you do not answer, you will have 0 points.

1 short exercise. You will receive +3 points if the exercise is correctly developed, indicating result and proceedings, +2 points if there is only the correct result without explanation, +1 points if the result is partially correct, 0 points if it is unanswered.

2 open questions. Up to +5 points are assigned based on the following 5 criteria:

  • KNOWLDEGE
    0 = Unanswered/Information is incorrect
    0,5 = Information is only partially correct, with some inaccuracies
    1 = Information is correct and demonstrates sound understanding of the topic
  • ACCURACY and COMPLETENESS
    0 = Unanswered/The response does not address the question or is largely incomplete
    0,5 = The response is partially complete, some required aspects are missing
    1 = The response is complete and addresses all key aspect of the question
  • TERMINOLOGY
    0 = Unanswered/Correct and technical terminology is absent
    0,5 = Terminology is generally appropriate, with some inaccuracies
    1 = A correct and technical terminology is used
  • ANALYTICAL and CRITICAL THINKING
    0 = Unanswered/Ideas are merely listed, with no explanation and connections between concepts, examples are missing
    0,5 = The response is more descriptive than critically discussed, examples and logical connections are weakly introduced, but they result limited
    1 = The response demonstrates coherent reasoning, it connects concepts and ideas, it presents examples and critically discusses the main aspects
  • CLARITY
    0 = Unanswered/The response is unclear, disorganized and difficult to follow
    0,5 = The response is understandable, but could be better organized
    1 = The response is clear, well-structured and logically organized

 

Strumenti a supporto della didattica

Teaching tools include traditional class with video projector and pc, on-site survey, workshops through the use of software and drawings.
