Dipartimento Unibo coinvolto:

  • Dipartimento delle Arti

Eventuali altri Dipartimenti coinvolti:

  • Dipartimento di Scienze Politiche e Sociali; Dipartimento di Lingue, Letterature e Culture Moderne

Partner:

  • Toyo University, Giappone; University of California Los angeles (UCLA), Stati Uniti

Obiettivo: The project aims at the development of a joint innovative collaborative platform to discuss the evolution and interconnections between media and politics in Europe, East Asia and the US among the institutions, strengthening their relations thanks to a common project.

Firstly, the project aims to discuss the various historical backgrounds and the evolution of the main Asian and Western national contexts, with a focus on the implications that the media system has produced on political consensus-building processes in the different areas. This project aims at filling this gap by creating ad-hoc teaching and learning activities. In addition, the presence of a top-level U.S. university as partner will give to the project a more nuanced understanding of the so-called “Western” perspective on media and politics and a different point of view in analyzing the East Asian context. Secondly, this project aims to enhance teaching staff skills in using theoretical and methodological tools to disseminate their knowledge on the interaction between the media and the political institutional spheres in the areas which are involved in the project. These activities are linked thanks to the creation an innovative online platform managed by the project team of professors, researchers and Ph.D. students gathering all project outputs guaranteeing their dissemination and utilization. Lastly, the project promotes students’ ability to analyze the political and social implications of media as well as to assess the influence of contemporary communication processes on political dynamics. Moreover, by giving BA and MA students the opportunity to present in an international conference, this project aims at enhancing their skills in term of independent research and academic writing.

Budget: 18.500 €

Perché collaborare con l'università coinvolta nel progetto può essere significativo per Unibo?

The University of Bologna has important agreements in place with both Toyo University and the University of California Los Angeles, two very prestigious universities with important academic and teaching experiences in both political and media studies. For these reasons, we have identified a clear common strategic interest: building international partnerships that can support the development of innovative education activities involving communication and media studies, political science and international relations, strengthening the Department multidisciplinary approach. The present project enables this shared vision.

In addition, to this shared interest that has put the partners together, the Department of Arts at UNIBO wishes to:

  • Support the “internationalization at home” of the Department by increasing the number of international visiting professors and by supporting the students’ future career by providing them with critical tools to analyze the interactions between political institutions and media both in Western and East Asian political systems;
  • Enrich the MA degree program in Information, Cultures and Media Organization (INCOM),to meet the increasing students’ demand for Asia-focused courses and for a perspective on the international media system and the interactions between media and politics, by creating synergies with the BA degree program in Asian Languages, Markets and Cultures offered at the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures and the MA program in International Politics and Economics at the Department of Political and Social Sciences.

The universities involved have been mentioned as main returns of the project:

  • The creation of a core constituency of universities, that are interested in interactions between media and politics and the comparison between three different systems in Europe, East Asia and the U.S. This interest could gradually lead to the consolidation of strong collaborative academic programs with UNIBO and other European partners;
  • Attaining and consolidating a global academic community that is interested in the analysis of a key aspect of the rapidly changing global situation which is that of the relations between media and politics, with specific attention to a comparative analysis of East Asian and Western countries.

Principali risultati attesi

The project’s general purpose is to create a new and relevant opportunity for analyzing issues like the European, East Asian and US media and political systems. The proposal is characterized by its innovative dimension, given that it does not only intend to give specific competencies, but also to enhance a form of exchange and cross-cultural dialogue between the institutions involved.

  • Activity 2. Invitation of two staff members from UNIBO for a two-week series of lectures
