Programma
Within the activities SustainEUorPlanet – Jean Monnet Chair Project, coordinated by Prof. Elisa Baroncini, on 4 May 2026, the Department of Legal Studies of the University of Bologna will host a presentation of the book “Economic Sanctions from Havana to Baghdad: Legitimacy, Accountability, and Humanitarian Consequences”, edited by Prof. Joy Gordon. The event brings together scholars and policy experts to reflect on the legal, economic, and humanitarian implications of contemporary sanctions regimes, with particular attention to their design, implementation, and real-world consequences.
The discussion will situate the humanitarian, economic, and legal consequences of sanctions within broader debates on legitimacy, accountability, and the effectiveness of sanctions as tools of international governance. By engaging diverse disciplinary perspectives, the seminar aims to assess whether sanctions can reconcile foreign-policy objectives with humanitarian considerations, and how regulatory frameworks might be improved to mitigate unintended harm.
With Prof. Clara Portela (University of Valencia), Prof. Emanuela Carbonara (University of Bologna), Prof. Alessandra Castellini (University of Bologna) , Dr. Josefine Petrick (Bourse & Bazaar Foundation), and Dr. Francesco Salesio Schiavi (Middle East Institute Switzerland (MEIS)).
Moderator: Prof. Elisa Baroncini, SustainEUorPlanet Jean Monnet Chair, University of Bologna.
Introductory Remarks: Prof. Federico Casolari, Director of the Department of Legal Studies, University of Bologna.
