This course provides an examination of the roles and functions of human resource management in service organizations. The course examines how HR functions and techniques help an organzation to perform effectively and assist organizations to achieve a competitive advantage through the "service people".

  • Personality & Values: Big five model; Positive and negative personality traits; Models of fit; Values.
  • HRM Introduction & Functions (Attracting People): Job description (HR tool); Tactics, techniques and sources of recruitment, local and global; Importance of attracting qualified candidates; Selection techniques, tests and interviews; Headhunters.
  • Attitudes & Job satisfaction: Types of work attitudes; Job satisfaction and job dissatisfaction; Theory of cognitive dissonance.
  • Developing People: Training; Development; Learning organization; On the job training and developing people’s potential; Appraisal performance; Feedback skills; Careers.
  • Motivation: Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, Herzberg’s two-factor theory; Organizational justice; Goals.
  • Rewarding People: Remuneration elements; Compensation package; Types of rewards: financial and non-financial; Administering benefits; Employee recognition.
  • Teams & Leadership: Leadership and power; Evolution of Leadership theories; Trait perspective; Behavioral theories; Contingency perspective; Leadership styles; Stages of group development, Group norms; Team effectiveness.

Metodi didattici

There are three contact hours per session with key concepts, methods and techniques being introduced via lectures. Group discussion, case studies, video materials and group assignments will be used to combine conceptual and experiential approaches.

Modalità di verifica e valutazione dell'apprendimento

Final grades will be based on class participation and case study presentations (40%) and a final written exam (60%).

 

Graduation of the vote:

  • Preparation on a very limited number of topics covered in the course, very limited analytical skills, overall correct language expression → 18-19;
  • Preparation on a limited number of topics covered in the course, moderate analytical skills, expression in correct language → 20-24;
  • Preparation on a large number of topics covered in the course, good analytical skills, mastery of specific terminology → 25-29;
  • Exhaustive preparation on the topics covered in the course, excellent critical analysis and connection, full mastery of specific terminology and ability to argue and self-reflection → 30-30L.
