97510 - Polymers for Energy and Advanced Applications

Academic Year 2022/2023

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Photochemistry and Molecular Materials (cod. 9074)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student has acquired the knowledge for the comprehension of the structure-property correlations in polymeric materials to achieve stimuli responsiveness and the knowledge of the most important classes of polymeric materials used for energy storage, energy conversion and for advanced applications.

Course contents

  • Polymer composite and nanocomposites: basic definitions, types of matrix, fillers, filler distribution and geometry, lightweight materials for energy saving
  • Conductive polymers and composites: type of polymers and fillers conductive mechanism, synthesis and properties
  • Radiation shielding: materials, mechanism of shielding
  • Polymers in energy storage devices: separators, binders, polyelectrolytes
  • Piezoelectric polymers and composites for energy harvesting: type of polymers and properties
  • Stimuli-responsive polymers: shape-memory, mechano-responsive, vitrimers

Readings/Bibliography

The lesson's notes will be fundamental.

Power point presentations shown during lessons will be availablein Virtuale.

Book chapters and review papers provided during the course.

Teaching methods

Room lectures with the aid of projector.

Assessment methods

Learning assessment is based on an oral examination at the end of the course. The oral examination will last around 40 minutes and aims at evaluating the theoretical knowledge acquired during the course, the possession of a correct technical language and the understanding of the covered topics.
