Course contents

Art and literature: Bologna 'la dotta' seen through its painted interiors

The seminar’s goal is to expose students to the relationship between art and literature during the centuries of Early Modern Age, and to study it through the perspective of interior decoration in aristocratic residences (XVI-XIX century), which has been the subject of constant interest of the ruling class as a means of communication of political and ideological values. The seminar will focus on the places where this perspective takes place in Bologna, since the city preserves interiors of great artistic importance and of remarkable cultural interest dating back to different historical moments.

Lectures in the classroom, intended to provide a theoretical framework of reference, will alternate with 'on the field' lessons, during which both the historical-artistic characteristics of the decorations and the variable, but always crucial, link with written sources, will be explored with the active participation of students.

Students will also be able to confront with some texts in ancient edition from which the decorations draw inspiration.
