Learning outcomes

Once completed the course, the student has acquired the ability to recognize the testimonial and socio-cultural value of architectural elements and urban contexts. In particular, the student is able to: - document the reasons and the potential for transformation compliant with their protection - envisage transformative scenarios considering the evolution of relationships, communications, productive streams in several areas.

  • The Cervellati plan for Bologna (1969-1973)
  • Urban Design. The birth of the discipline between Italy and USA
  • “Comunità Italia”. The Community as a religious, political and cultural model
  • The towns as a memory container
  • The “historical city” in Europe. From the industrial revolution to the territorial changes: the main urban developments from 1800 to 1910
  • The postwar reconstruction in Italy
  • The reconstruction of the historical center in Frankfurt, 1945-1955
  • Hints on the History and Theory of the Restoration. The “Barri gòtic” in Barcellona and Alfonso Rubbiani’s Bologna
  • Matera and Ludovico Quaroni’s neighborhood “La Martella”. From a public shame to example of good urban design
  • Giancarlo De Carlo: The Piano regolatore of Urbino and the plan for the “New Center” of Rimini

Readings/Bibliography

Bibliographic references and study materials will be provided during the lectures and seminars. 

Teaching methods

Alongside the ex cathedra lessons and face-to-face/online seminars, the course includes visits in Bologna (compatibly with the possibilities and circumstances) and the carrying out of different exercises.

Assessment methods

The final exam will consist in an oral interview  to verify the exercises and the acquisition of the topics covered during the lectures and seminar as well as the contents of the bibliographic materials provided.
