81925 - History of Contemporary City

Academic Year 2022/2023

Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide knowledge about the history of the contemporary city and the actors involved in its transformation. The course explains design actions conceived outside the specialized design disciplines and the circumstantial events in which nonspecialist actors, acting, transform physical space. At the end of the course the student knows how to critically analyze complex urban places.

Course contents

The course will serve as a critical itinerary for understanding the contemporary city in light of its historical evolution. After addressing the formation and development of the Italian and European city of the Ancien Régime more broadly, we will focus on some aspects of its physical reorganization and its profound morphological and functional transformations from the late 18th century to the present.
