Learning outcomes

The course aims at providing the student the keys to understand the transformations of the city and the territory, and it aims to develop skills for the design and the management of urban policies, considering the role of the active participation of citizens , and of socio - cultural dynamics within the contemporary city. At the end of the course the student is able to : interpret the phenomena of urban regeneration ; interpret many urban models, with particular attention to metropolitan cities ; interpret the emerging dynamics of socio - spatial reorganization in the contemporary city - territory.

Course contents

The course will alternate lectures and an exercise assigned to the students individually or in small groups.

Lectures will be organized in two parts: the first part will introduce the relevant issues concerning urban policies and the tools for urban governance; the second part will propose a selection of case studies and examples, with the aim of illustrate good design practices with a focus on active participation of citizens and socio - cultural dynamics.

The proposed exercise consists of an exercise of urban policy analysis, with the aim of accustoming students to a systematic reading of the physical and policy context in which their work takes place.

Teaching methods

The Course includes lectures, seminars and a practical urban survey work, that will be developed by the students in small groups. This work will be verified and discussed during the Course.

All the activities will be carried out in presence and/or through IOL in order to ensure maximum participation to all the students

Assessment methods

The assessment takes place throughout the course, especially thanks to the development of the policy analysis exercise. It is through this exercise that students are called to put into practice the notions learned through front lessons and recommended readings.

The final exam is oral, on the topics discussed during the lessons, and on the exercise executed by the students.

Lectures in classroom with multimedia presentations available in IOL.

Group work supported by maps and materials available in IOL.

Department library as useful support for bibliographic research, specific documentation and investigation.
