72816 - Laboratory of Bridge Design M

Academic Year 2022/2023

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Civil Engineering (cod. 0930)

Also valid for Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Civil Engineering (cod. 0930)

Learning outcomes

The student develops an individual design project of a simple r.c. precast-beam bridge. To this purpose, during the course, the design and dimensioning criteria of a girder bridge deckand of the corresponding substructures are studied; numerical and graphical applications are then required.

Course contents

1. THE DESIGN OF A BRIDGE DECK
Characteristics of the design project
Elements of road geometry
The transversal cross-section of the bridge deck
The crash barriers

2. DESIGN CRITERIA OF THE BRIDGE DECK
The general approach of the design
The slab design
Simplified analysis for the transversal load distribution

3. COMPOSITE STRUCTURES
General principles
The stud-bolt connectors
Non-linear phenomena (creep, concrete shrinkage, construction stages, ...)

4. THE CALCULATION OF THE PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BEAMS
The loads
Codes
The stages of loading
Dimensioning of the composite beams
Strength verifications (flexure and shear)
Buckling verifications
Web local buckling issues
Fatigue verifications

5. BEARING DEVICES AND DECK JOINTS

The abutments

If time permits:

7. LOADING TESTS
Test setup
Deflection measurements

Teaching methods

Frontal lessons mainly at the blackboard (occasional use of Power-Point slides).
Numerical applicative examples at the blackboard.
Revision of the individidual design projects developed by the students with the help of a tutor.

Assessment methods

Each student will have to develop either alone, or in collaboration with another student or at most two other students, a design project of a girder bridge, complete with calculation report, executive technical drawings and selected construction details.

The assessment will be referred to the design project developed by the student.

It will consist in:
1. examination of the technical drawings
2. analysis of the technical report
3. calculation and design criteria and technical drawings of the construction details

The oral test is aimed at checking if the student is able to apply the theoretical aspects in a specific applicative example of bridge design.

Teaching tools

Possible lecture-notes supplied by the teacher.
Power-Point presentations.
