Learning outcomes
The laboratory activity (125 hours) examines metal materials and alloys. At the end of the activity, the student will know the material and morphological characteristics and how to evaluate any problems of alteration and degradation to get to define an appropriate conservation methodology.
Course contents
The activity examines the study and restoration of metal artifacts and alloys; the activities are carried out in laboratories, archaeological sites or museums.
1.Conservation and restoration methods: in-depth analysis of criteria and methods of cleaning (mechanical, chemical, electrochemical, electrolytic) stabilization and corrosion inhibition, consolidation, bonding, integration, protection, storage. Study of the tools and products used.
2.Introduction to post-medieval metals and alloys and related processing techniques
3.Degradation metal artifacts outdoors and indoors, with particular attention to museums and storage.
4.Preventive storage, monitoring and maintenance . Tools and techniques.
Teaching methods
Considering the activities and teaching methods, to attend the laboratory all students must complete Safety training by completing Modules 1 and 2 in e-learning mode [https///www.unibo.it/it/services-and-opportunity/health-and-care/health-and-safety/safety-and-health-in-the-workplace study-and-internship] and participating in Modules 3 and 4 specific training on safety and health in the places of study. Information about scheduling and methods of attendance of specific training modules can be found in the appropriate section of the course website. For the specific activities of restoration laboratories, medical fitness is required, which is assessed following a medical examination organised by the University Service of Occupational Medicine.
Assessment methods
The assessment will be carried out through two tests: a written test followed by an oral examination. The student must demonstrate a good knowledge of the bibliography as well as the ability to connect the contents learned, to develop a project, to use the correct terminology. The evaluation will consider the active participation in lectures and exercises, and the improvement of the technique during the year. The student will be evaluated for each module of the Laboratory activities, and will obtain a judgment (insufficient, sufficient, good, more than good, excellent, excellent). Eligibility is achieved when all evaluations are sufficiency or more.
