52432 - Infectious Diseases, Prophylaxis and Police Employed in Veterinary Health and Hygiene Surveillance

Learning outcomes

The course aims at giving an in-depth knowledge on contagious exotic and enzootic diseases, with particular enphasis to   those included in the OIE list with higher risk of introduction in the country. Principles of Veterinarian Public Health, epidemiology and control of zoonosis. Students are able to identify factors that influence the health and well-being and socio-political and economic dimensions of the transmissible diseases of animals and humans.

 

Course contents

At the end of the course the students are able to play the role of international and national institutions for the protection of the welfare and health of animals and humans. They are also able to define the sequence and hierarchy of actions aimed at implementing health plans in ordinary or emergency situations.

With regard to epidemic diseases, students will learn to evaluate the most appropriate prevention measures to avoid the emergence of outbreaks in a farm or in a territory. With regard to endemic diseases, students will be able to identify and discuss the most appropriate control and prophylactic measures to limit their economic impact. The practical exercises are aimed at solving a concrete problem of health risk, resulting in trade in animals and their products, by processing the import risk analysis according to the method described by the OIE and by quantitatively estimating the risk.

Students understand the organization and role of national and international institutions dealing with animal health: International Governance, National Governance, National Emergency Plan.

Students will be able to identify factors influencing health and welfare and the socio-political and economic dimensions of communicable animal and human diseases.

They will learn about the role and interactions of organisations dealing with animal and human health in different ways: OIE, WHO, EFSA and FAO. FAO is also involved in aspects related to the role of the veterinary profession in reducing hunger and promoting sustainable production.

Students will address the unique "One Health" theme and the holistic approach to animal health and the environment considered necessary to achieve many of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) identified by the United Nations.

The student understands the importance of multistakeholder partnerships and shared responsibilities for promoting health and sustainable development.

Students will learn about examples of global partnerships established by international organizations to reduce the economic and social impact of communicable diseases.

They will understand the importance of global scientific cooperation in the dissemination and sharing of health data and to foster capacity building in the field of prevention and control of communicable diseases in developing countries.

Specifically for each disease, etiopathogenesis, symptomatology and diagnosis will be addressed. They will cover epidemiology and discuss biosecurity principles, national and European legislation and define and motivate actions to be taken in the event of an outbreak of the following contagious and contagious diseases: Foot and Mouth Disease, Vesicular Disease, BVD-MD, Classical Swine Fever, African Swine Fever.

Students will learn about etiopathogenesis, symptomatology and diagnosis; they will understand epidemiology and discuss biosafety principles; they will learn about national and European legislation and will define and motivate actions to be taken in the following emerging diseases: Rift Valley Fever, Lumpy skin disease and sheep and goat smallpox, Peste des petits. ruminants.

Students will learn about etiopathogenesis, symptomatology and diagnosis of the following diseases transmissible to humans (zoonoses): Rabies, Zoonoses Poxvirus infections, Brucellosis, Tuberculosis, Anthrax.

The course is part of the integrated course TRANSMISSIBLE DISEASES AND PUBLIC HEALTH The lecturer responsible for the final marking for the integrated course is Prof. Elena Catelli.

Teaching methods

Individual study, frontal lessons and soft flipped classroom method will be introduced. with active discussions of  video and real-life cases and group and individual exercises.

 

Assessment methods

The assessment is expressed by a mark in thirtieths for the examinations. The test is passed with a mark of at least 18/30. In the case of a maximum mark (30/30), cum laude may be awarded.

Written examination including 6 open questions lasting 2 hours. The exam aims at  evaluating the critical and methodological skills acquired by the student during the course. Each answer will be scored with a minimum of 0 to a maximum of 5 on the basis of the following criteria:

1) Students who acquired skills to identify and handle the core ideas and cultural areas of the discipline will be acknowledged with a high positive marks.

2)Students achieving an organic view of the issues addressed during lectures and discussion, demonstrating a mastery with specific terminology and conceptual framework of the discipline,  will be assessed with marks of excellence.

3) Lack of concision and the usage of inappropriate language and terminology will lead to a fair evaluation; knowledge gaps and inappropriate language - although in a context of acceptable knowledge - will not go beyond the grade threshold".

4) Knowledge gaps, inappropriate language, and lack of any overall view of the basic issues discussed during the course that will lead to an insufficient assessment.

Should the precautionary measures related to the COVID-19 epidemic be applied again the examination will be held orally in online mode and the evaluation criteria are the same as those described for the written examination.
