95974 - PREVENTION AND MONITORING OF METABOLIC DISEASES IN INTENSIVE ANIMAL PRODUCTION

Academic Year 2021/2022

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Food Animal Metabolism and Management in the Circular Economy (cod. 5814)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, students have learned which haematochemical performance indicators are useful to evaluate the metabolic balance of ruminants, pigs, chickens, and fishes. In addition, students are prepared to perform samples of biological material. Finally, students are prepared to perform laboratory analysis on blood and other biological samples.

Course contents

Basic concepts of hematology, clinical chemistry and other laboratory evaluation applied to the evaluation of animal production

Readings/Bibliography

1) Schalm's Veterinary Hematology (Wiley-Blackwell 2010)

2) Stockham and Scott. Fundamentals of veterinary Clinical Pathology (Blackwell 2008)

3) Review articles

Teaching methods

The course will be organized in frontal lessons, both in presence and online, and practices in groups in laboratory and online

Assessment methods

The final evaluation is aimed at defining the achievement of the following training objectives:

- basic hematology

- clinical chemistry: renal function, liver integrity, electrolytes and selected metabolic pathways

- acute phase reactants linked to diseases and stressors

The final grade will be defined as follows:

90% score achieved in a test consisting of 40 multiple choice questions that will take place at the end of the second part of the course.

10% evaluation of students' active participation in laboratory or self-employment activities.

The exam will be considered as successful with a minimum score of 24/40

Teaching tools

Slideshow presentations will be used during frontal lessons, together with videos.

Work group for lab activities, both online and in presence, and for literature analysis and re-elaboration.
