Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student: - Knows the main psychological theories concerning the cognitive, emotional and motivational aspects of learning and in particular in relation to situations of failure (theories of academic motivation and model of learning from error). - S/he is able to recognize and analyze his/her own emotional, cognitive and motivational reactions following situations of failure. - Knows adaptive and maladaptive strategies after failure in order to learn from failure. - Can analyze available resources and plan strategies to learn from mistakes

Course contents

The course will take place in the second semester at the Cesena campus (address: piazza A. Moro, 90, Cesena, FC).

The course is cross-curricular, therefore all Unibo students enrolled in the A.Y. 2021/22 whose course of study has identified this course as consistent with the educational pathway of the course of study may enroll.

The course aims to provide knowledge and skills related to the key competence identified by the European Union "Learning to learn". The ability to persevere in learning, in fact, also depends on the knowledge and the conscious use of cognitive and motivational strategies related to one's learning objectives, in order to overcome the obstacles encountered during the training course.
In particular, it aims to promote the learning of knowledge and skills related to psychological, motivational and learning processes resulting from situations of failure, as well as to promote the development of awareness of cognitive and emotional processes involved in learning, developing the ability to identify causes, resources and strategies to learn from mistakes and failures.

The course is innovative because it will address a heterogeneous group of students who will be asked to actively contribute to the course, "building their knowledge" from the analysis of case studies and discussion of their experiences.

The course is structured in the following modules:
Module 1. Motivation, learning objectives, psychological aspects of failure in the learning process.
Module 2. Cognitive, emotional and motivational strategies to learn from mistakes. The course is structured into the following topics:
1. Motivation, learning goals, psychological aspects of failure in the learning process.
2. Cognitive, emotional and motivational strategies to learn from mistakes.
The course requires students to produce a written paper as part of the training activity (6 hours of distance learning, see teaching methods) that will be aimed at identifying causes, resources and strategies to learn from mistakes and failures and aims to promote the acquisition of knowledge and skills related to psychological processes, motivation and learning from failure. The paper must be produced during the course of the lessons and delivered in time for the final test (the exact timing will be communicated during the first lesson of the course).

Readings/Bibliography

Study materials will be made available on the University "Virtual" platform (https://virtuale.unibo.it/) before and during the course.

Teaching methods

The delivery of Unibo didactic activities of the second semester is planned in mixed mode: the student can decide whether to attend in presence or at a distance.

The course includes 18 hours (of which 6 hours of exercises).
During the classroom lessons, the teaching will be mainly based on active teaching methods, through the analysis of case studies, analysis and discussion of students' experiences.
During the 6 hours of exercises, students will be asked to prepare and test tools and strategies for dealing with failure situations and produce the written paper.
The lessons will be held in the second semester. Dates will be published on this page as soon as they are available.

Assessment methods

The final assessment will be based on the presentation and oral discussion of a written paper aimed at identifying strategies to "learn from mistakes" and, specifically, the acquisition of knowledge and skills related to psychological motivational and learning processes resulting from situations of failure.
Assessment will be based on two elements:
1) the knowledge of the areas of expertise addressed in the course in the psychology of learning (appropriate materials and bibliographic suggestions will be provided);
2) the ability to analyze the elements that characterize a situation of coping with error and to identify strategies to improve one's transversal competence "learning to learn" from errors.
The written paper must be submitted via email one week before the exam date.
The assessment will involve a single overall evaluation of the paper and the oral discussion. The oral discussion will consist of three questions and the final grade will be in thirtieths (maximum score: 30/30). Each answer will be scored from 0 to a maximum of 10 points. The evaluation of the answers will take into account the following criteria: (1) completeness of answers; (2) congruence of answers; and (3) personal reworking skills. If all answers are given in a particularly clear, comprehensive manner and with an argument that shows full mastery of the topic, honors will be added to the final grade.
Due to the Coronavirus emergency, and until normal teaching is restored, the oral exam will be online via Microsoft Teams. To take the oral exam online you will need to have an active video camera, a working microphone, and a document to show.
Registration for the exam must be done through the Almaesami app (https://almaesami.unibo.it).

NB: Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders can contact the teacher and the University Service for Students with Disabilities and DSA (http://www.studentidisabili.unibo.it/ ) to agree on appropriate teaching and assessment methods.

Teaching tools

The e-learning platform of Ateneo (virtuale.unibo.it) will be the main support for the didactic activity.
From the platform will be downloadable the slides used in lessons, exercises and insights.
At the start of the course all the indications of the course will be provided (exercises, questionnaires, deadlines, ...).
