Learning outcomes

Students acquire knowledge about the intensive and extensive (mainly related to open systems and breeding according to the dictates of the Organic Method) rearing of cattle and pigs.

In particular, the student is able to assess the factors which can affect the profitability of the farming-system, product quality, animal welfare, environmental impact and adopt the necessary strategies to improve these aspects

Course contents

The course will be divided into 3 areas:

- Farming of pigs (theoretical and practical lessons held by the holder of course) - 28 hours

- Farming of cattle (theoretical and practical lessons held by Dr. Marco Tassinari) - 28 hours

- sustainable livestock production and animal welfare (theoretical and practical lessons held by Prof. Giovanna Martelli) -24 hours

The course aims to provide advanced knowledge and, above all, practical technologies for the breeding of the species in question.

At the beginning of the course will be given detailed guidance on the internal organization of theoretical and practical lessons.

Assessment methods

The final grade of the course "Animal Production and Veterinary legislation " consists of the synthesis of the final evaluations of the different teachings course ("animal production" and "Animal protection and Veterinary legislation") .

 

In details, here is the score grid for oral examinations:

- a very thorough knowledge of the topics addressed in the course, together with high skills of critical analysis, connection and a sure command of specific terminology will be evaluated with the maximum score (30-30L);

- a thorough knowledge of the topics addressed in the course, together with good analytical and critical skills and the possession of a sure command of specific terminology will be evaluated with good marks (27-29);

- a technically adequate preparation and a sufficient analytical capacity, even if not particularly articulated, expressed in a correct language, will produce fair evaluations (23-26);

- sufficient preparation and capacity for analysis, expressed in a language which is barely formally correct, will determine the sufficiency (18-22).
