Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students: know evidence-based interventions aimed at improving well-being, their mechanisms of action, potential beneficial and adverse effects; -are able to evaluate the efficacy of well-being interventions and plan research and intervention projects to reduce risk in populations with unhealthy lifestyle and promote adaptation and self-management in patients with chronic and progressive diseases.

Course contents

Prof. Danilo Carrozzino (Module 1):

The course will provide students with a comprehensive overview of the following well-being interventions:

  • Principles of Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT)
  • Establishing the therapeutic relationship
  • Structuring and educating
  • Working with automatic thoughts
  • Behavioral strategies
  • Modifying schemas
  • The Well-Being Therapy (WBT): the background and its development
  • The structure of WBT: initial, intermediate, and final sessions
  • The role of WBT and its clinical applications
  • The Metacognitive Therapy
  • The Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • The Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • The Quality of Life Therapy

The course will take place during the first semester.

Prof. Rabih Chattat (Module 2):

The main content of the module will be about living well with chronic disease, focusing on olders populations.

The topic which will be addressed are about:

  1. The demographic change and the challenge of Chronic disease
  2. Health dimensions and chronic disease
  3. The neurocognitive disorders
  4. Frailty and dependency in olders
  5. The psychosocial model in geriatrics: promoting living well
  6. Assessment of psychosocial needs olders
  7. Assessment of psychosocial needs of caregivers
  8. Planning psychosocial interventions
  9. Type and methods of psychosocial interventions
  10. Palliative and end of life care

Teaching methods

Prof. Danilo Carrozzino (Module 1):

Since the best way to grasp the essence of well-being interventions is to combine readings and didactic sessions with laboratory and/or experiential learning activities (e.g., class discussion and presentations, group work, and role-playing), a variety of exercises, troubleshooting guides, and video illustrations of clinician interactions with patients will be used. Class attendance and active participation are highly recommended, as they are essential elements in the learning process.

Prof. Rabih Chattat (Module 2):

The objective of the course is allow students to evaluate and plan psychosocial intervention for older people with chronic disease. The way to achieve this outcomes is to present knowledge about assessment and intervention and to use clinical case as well as movies in order to train students in achieving this objective. Small group work will also be planned.

Assessment methods

Prof. Danilo Carrozzino (Module 1):

As to this module, the final exam consists of an oral examination in order to assess the achievement of learning outcomes. The highest mark (30/30), eventually cum laude, will reflect the comprehensiveness, adequacy and full articulation of the answers.

Prof. Rabih Chattat (Module 2):

For this module a quiz approach (questions with multiple responses) regarding the different topics addressed during the course will be used. In this way it will be possible to evaluate the overall knowledge of the students.

Final Grade:

The final grade will be the arithmetic average of the marks obtained in the two modules.
