Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student knows the basic principles of the the motion of bodies, of the thermodynamical behaviour of natural matter, and of the oscillatory phenomena and is able to solve simple physical problems.

Course contents

The course is subdivided into two parts of about 36 hours, at the end of each of which a partial verification will be made.

The first part will be held from the beginning of the second semester to the teaching interruption and will focus on :

Physical quantities, measurement units, kinematics and dynamics of material points, work and energy, conservation of energy and momentum. Law of gravitation and Kepler's laws.

The second part will be held from the teaching interruption to the end of the second semester and will focus on :

Kinematics of extended bodies, rotational dynamics. Static equilibrium , elasticity. Principles of fluid statics and fluid dynamics. Thermodynamics, thermal expansion, gas laws. Heat, first law of thermodynamics, kinetic theory of gases, second law of thermodynamics, entropy. Oscillations, wave, sound.

Assessment methods

Written exam consisting of one free-running topic a questionnaire with multiple answers, formulas and definitions, and the resolution of four problems. Short oral discussion of the written exam.
