Learning outcomes

For Polish Language

Students will develop a good knowledge of linguistic and discursive structures of the Polish language, in both synchronic and diachronic terms, and will be able to apply them profitably to textual analysis and translation. Through classroom practice, their communicative skills (both active and passive) will progress towards the C2 level of the Common European Framework.

For Polish Literature

Students will acquire an in-depth knowledge of the history of modern Polish literature, with particular attention to the relationship between literary texts and their historical, artistic and linguistic context. Sudents wll get to know and learn how to use practical methodologies for the analysis and interpretation of literary texts. They will beable to elaborate complex analyses and formulate independent reflections on specific research topics.

Course contents

The course is divided into two modules: 1) Introduction to literary translation between Italian and Polish 2) Introduction to literary self-translation in the Polish context
Both students of Polish language and students of Polish literature will have to follow both modules. The reading list is separate.
The first module will focus on issues of translation, mainly literary (poetic, narrative, theatrical), but also audiovisual. It will have a triple articulation: theoretical, critical-analytical and practical. The first step will be a diachronic overview of translation theories in the Polish cultural sphere, illustrating the peculiarities of the "Polish school" in the international context. IThe course will then focus on translation analysis of some literary texts, and finally, there will be practical exercises of collective and individual translation.
The second module will start from a theoretical framework of the phenomenon of self-translation and will then focus on the practice of self-translation in the Polish linguistic-cultural context.

Teaching methods

Classes will be held in person, but with the possibility of remote attendance on Microsoft TEAMS for students.
Further details will be provided at the beginning of the course.
N.B. The Polish Language course includes, in addition to the lectures, language exercises. The Polish Literature course includes only lectures.

Assessment methods

The assessment test is oral (in person or remotely). There will be no synchronous written test, but:
(a) Language students will have to produce an analysis of a "translation series" proposed by the teacher. The paper, written in Polish, must be sent by e-mail to the teacher at least five days before the chosen exam date, regardless of the examination session.
b) Literature students must produce a stylistic analysis of a literary text to be agreed with the teacher. The paper, written in Polish, must be sent by e-mail to the teacher at least five days before the chosen exam date, regardless of the examination session.
During the course, students may be asked to complete assignments such as translations or short texts in Polish. These tasks will not be evaluated with marks, but their completion is a prerequisite for the final assessment.
Assessment of Polish Language LM.
The final assessment, based on the written paper and the oral test, is aimed at ascertaining the effective acquisition of the four language skills at the level required by the educational objectives of the course, according to the parameters set by the Council of Europe, as well as the metalinguistic and translation skills conveyed during the lessons.
Assessment of Polish Literature 1 and 2 LM.
The test, only oral, consists of an interview aimed at assessing the skills and critical and methodological abilities acquired by the student, who will be invited to comment on the texts in the programme. The student will have to demonstrate an appropriate knowledge of the bibliography indicated in the programme, as well as of the topics dealt with during the lessons.
Grading criteria
The student's attainment of a broad and systematic vision of the themes addressed in the lessons and of the readings indicated in the bibliography, together with their critical use, the demonstration of a mastery of expression and of specific language will be evaluated with marks of excellence (28-30).
A largely mnemonic knowledge of the subject, inadequate synthesis and analysis skills and correct but not always appropriate language will lead to fair marks (23-27).
Approximate knowledge, superficial comprehension, poor analytical skills and not always appropriate expression will lead to grades between sufficient and slightly above (18-22).
Inadequate training, inappropriate language, lack of orientation within the bibliographical materials offered in the programme can only be evaluated negatively.
