Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will be able to diagnose and treat the most common dermatlogical disorders, such as: inflammatory, infective, parasitic, neolastic and sessually transmitted diseases.
Course contents
Anatomy and physiology of the skin
Recognize skin signs and the elementary, primary and secondary lesions of skin and mucous membranes.
Perform dermatological physical examination.
Indicate the conditions in which it is useful or necessary to prescribe a specialist dermatological advice.
Briefly describe the technical modalities for performing a skin biopsy.
Infectious diseases of dermatological interest
Recognize or at least suspect the diagnosis and describe the clinical manifestations of the main skin and adnexal diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites (erysipelas, impetigo, herpes simplex, herpes zoster, warts, molluscum contagiosum, tinea capitis, tinea corporis, onychomycosis, candidiasis , pityriasis versicolor, scabies, pediculosis).
Set up a microscopic preparation to search for mites and fungi.
Toxic-allergic dermatosis
Recognize the symptoms of urticaria-angioedema syndromes, interpret their pathogenesis, research their causes.
Recognize or at least suspect the skin signs of toxic or allergic infections to drugs and prescribe tests and therapy. Classify purpuras in relation to their pathogenesis.
Autoimmune diseases
Recognize the clinical features of connective tissue diseases (lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, morphea, scleroderma).
Recognize the clinical pictures and indicate the most frequent causes of autoimmune bullous diseases (pemphigus, bullous pemphigoid, herpetiform dermatitis).
Perform a microscopic preparation for cytological examination.
Inflammatory dermatoses
Recognize the clinical manifestations of acne, rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, alopecia.
Define lichen planus.
Describe in depth the clinical pictures, the evolution, prognosis and therapy of psoriasis.
Allergic dermatoses
Describe the main features of: irritative contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis. Provide indications for drug prescriptions and describe how to perform, read and interpret diagnostic skin tests for skin allergy.
Sexually transmitted diseases
Describe the main clinical features of syphilis and gonorrhea, recognize patients to be sent for specialist treatment.
Classify the causes of urethritis, balanoposthitis and proctitis and recognize the clinical signs, indicate the best treatment.
Describe how to perform skin swabs.
Carry out counseling for sexually transmitted diseases
Skin cancers
Classify, recognize or at least suspect elementary lesions referable to benign and precancerous tumors.
Describe epidemiology, etiopathogenesis, natural history, morphological pictures and staging of nevi and melanoma.
Perform dermatoscopy
Indicate the preferential surgical therapeutic approaches for the different types of skin tumors and describe the modalities of surgical excision of lesions.

Teaching methods
Theoretical lessons will be conducted in a classroom equipped with multimedia equipment, with the main use of slides in PowerPoint format. Students will be provided with an electronic version of the slides presented during the lessons.
Frequency in the Dermatological Unit.
Assessment methods
The oral exam consists of one or more questions on the program for each of the three subjects (Infectious Diseases, Dermatology and Plastic Surgery). The number of questions may vary based on the level of preparation and study of the subject highlighted by the student in the answers. To pass the exam, the student must obtain the sufficiency in each of the three subjects and the final mark is the average of the three marks.
