Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student knows the role of psychological factors in the state of health and illness, the strategies to face the patient's psychological suffering, the psychological and relational features of eating disorders during the lifespan, the communication skills in healthcare settings, and the preventive and supportive strategies in eating disorders.

Course contents

The contribution of clinical psychology to the understanding of eating disorders.

Sick role and illness behavior.

Manifestations and classification of abnormal illness behavior.

Illness perception and coping strategies towards physical illness.

Psychological factors affecting medical conditions.

Job strain, burnout and psychological resilience in the health care provider.

Psychological implications of caregiving. 

Psychotherapeutic interventions.

Teaching materials will be available through username and password at the IOL online Platform.

References to suggested readings will be provided in the teaching materials.

Teaching methods

Frontal lessons with clinical exemplifications for a total of 24 hours.

Assessment methods

The final evaluation is aimed at assessing the knowledge of the main contents of the course.

The final evaluation is a written exam consisting of 31 multiple-choice questions (for each question, four answers to choose from). The evaluation will last for 45 minutes.

The correct answer to all the 31 questions corresponds to a score of 30 cum laude.
