Learning outcomes

Students know the basic elements of the Bulgarian language and culture. They are capable of understanding written texts and simple conversations.


Course contents

Grammar

The following grammar topics will be studied.

  • Grammatical aspect
  • Verb tenses (minalo svarsheno vreme, minalo neopredeleno vreme, minalo nesvarsheno vreme, minalo predvaritelno vreme)
  • Verb moods (uslovno nakloneniepreizkazno naklonenie
  • Use of prefixes and suffixes in verbs and nouns
  • Elements of syntax

Culture

The objective of this course is to put into practice what has been learnt in the Grammar module. To this end, audiovisual material and techniques like role-play or sight translation will be used. 

 

By using these materials students will discover different aspects of Bulgarian culture. Specifically, three main topics will be dealt with:

  • geography: students will be able to have an overview of the context where Bulgaria is located, to study the main features of Bulgarian cities and rural areas, to explore the (cultural) role of such sites as the Balkans, the Danube river and the Black sea; 
  • culture: students will get to know some of the major Bulgarian dance, folkloric, artistic and movie productions;
  • history and institutions: students will study the main events of the history of Bulgaria and will be able to identify its institutions.

Lectures, exercises, interactive methods.

Assessment methods

The final exam consists of a conversation on topics discussed during the semester (80% of the final grade). The students are expected to prepare for the lectures and to be active in class (20% of the final grade).
