Learning outcomes
The student knows the basic elements of the Bulgarian language and culture. She or he is capable of understanding written texts and simple conversations.

Alphabet and phonetics. Phonetic alterations: the alterations of sounded and soundless consonants, elision of unstressed vowels.
Main orthographic rules.
The noun (gender and number, identification and formation); the definite article; the vocative forms.
The pronouns: personal pronouns for subject, direct and indirect object, the reflexive personal pronoun, the doubled pronouns, the relative and demonstrative pronouns, the negative pronouns, the possessive pronouns, the possessive reflexive pronoun.
The adjectives (gender, number, definite article) and the adverbs. Comparatives.
The numeric forms: cardinal and ordinal (gender, number, definite article)
The verb: Conjugation (types e, и, а). The aspect: perfective and imperfective. Present and future tense. Imperfect and aorist. Imperative.
The prepositions.
The coordinating and subjugating conjunctions.

Assessment methods
The final exam consists in a conversation on topics discussed during the semester (80% of the final grade). The students are expected to prepare for the lectures and to be active in class (20% of the final grade).
