Learning outcomes

At the end of the course students will know the main tools for the analysis of the economic and financial performances of a firm, the basic principles for the investments’ decision and the key elements for a strategic planning and control.

Course contents

Teaching Unit 1 (14 hours): FIRM STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT

  1. The decision process in a firm
  2. Analysis of the competitive environment
  3. Strategy: definition, levels, roles and basic tools
  4. Competitive Advantage
  5. Competitive strategies
  6. Corporate strategies
  7. Development Strategies 

Teaching Unit 2 (4 hours): BUSINESS MODEL AND BUSINESS PLAN

  1. Business Planning as a firm strategic tool
  2. Business Model and Business Plan: definition and tools

Exercises, applications and seminars (depending on the availability) (12 hours) (business plan formats)

Prerequisites

The student needs to have an adequate preparation in basic mathematics, statistics and economics.

Teaching methods

The teaching course is constituted by oral lessons, exercises and (it coud be) seminars.

The teaching course is divided in 2 modules.

Each module comprehends 3 teaching units: 2 teaching units (18 hours per module) are oral lessons and the third (12 hours per each module) is dedicated to exercises (and seminars) about the issues developed throughout the module.

Seminars about interesting themes developed during the course could take place in the third teaching unit of each module.


Assessment methods

Oral examination (about 20-30 minutes), occasionally with exercises.

A written test could be organised at the end of the course but it is not compulsory for students.

The course comprehends two modules: final score will be an average of the results obtained in each module.

Students can take the final exam in English.
