Course contents

The course deals with the main endocrinological and nephrological/urological diseases of pet animals through the critical discussion of some clinical cases. In particular, the course aims to emphasize the importance of the procedural method. Each subject will be addressed through in-depth discussion of 1 or 2 clinical cases will act as an example for the most common diseases.

The primary learning objectives of the course are:
- Learn to collect the history and clinical signs
- Learn to integrate the information obtained in the formulation of a clinical diagnosis;
- Learn how formulate a diagnostic hypotheses;
- Learn how to critically evaluate the information found in the literature;
- Learning to comunicate properly with the owner;
- Learn how to perform an appropriate diagnostic protocol;
- Learn how to read the results obtained in the diagnostic protocol;
- Learning to issue a final diagnosis and set appropriate therapy;

Teaching methods

The teaching method is based on active learning and supervised by the teacher .
The clinical case is a pretext through which the student plays in the first person a diagnostic path by following the logical-deductive method. The work unfolds through the need 'to independently find the information necessary to progress in the development and troubleshooting.

Assessment methods

The outcome assessment is made at the end of the course, when each group presents its clinical case on a powerpoint presentation. Students are evaluated by the other students and teachers. Specifically, will be evaluated the logic and sequential procedure, the acquisition of the relevant scientific information the communication capacity and the efficacy in the exposition.

Teaching tools

The course is held in the IT lab or in a room suited to permit the work in small groups with computer. Students work in groups with at least one computer for each group. They have to work up the clinical case according to the steps that have been planned by the teacher. The course encourages the active learning process through the self-directed learning and the group discussion , including the interaction with the tutor/teacher
