06944 - Complements of Organic Chemistry

Academic Year 2019/2020

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Ravenna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Chemistry and Technologies for the Environment and Materials (cod. 8515)

Learning outcomes

The course will give students a knowledge in advanced organic chemistry topics, such as radical reactions, reductions and oxidations of organic molecules, orgnometallic compounds of copper and their use in conjugate additions, organic compounds of sulfur and phosphorous, heterocycles, and MS and NMR spectroscopies advanced techniques. Furthermore, the course will give students skills in planning an organic synthesis, focusing on retrosynthetic strategies, functional groups transformations, and protecting groups.

Course contents

Prerequisites:

Fundamentals on organic functional groups description and reactivity. Basic fundamentals of Mass and NMR spectroscopy.

Contents:

Organometallic chemistry (cuprates and conjugate additions).

Oxidations and Reductions and their chemoselective applications.

Organic compounds of sulfur and phosphorous.

Spectroscopic techniques (MS, 1H, and 13C NMR).

Retrosynthesis, disconnections, interconversions of functional groups, sinthons, and synthetic equivalents in advanced organic synthesis.

Teaching methods

Lessons supported by PowerPoint presentations and exercises. The teacher is willing to receive students outside the lesson time for additional explanations and/or discussion.

Assessment methods

The final examination will determine the level reached by the student in the objectives set out in the " Learning outcomes”

The assessment of the learning consists in a 2 hours written test, without the support of books or notes but with the periodic table.

To carry out the written exam registration is required through "Alma exams ", in respect of the mandatory deadlines.

The written test include 3 questions giving a value of 12 points each. The exercises consist in the synthesis of complex organic molecules.

The maximum score is therefore 36 out of 30, the honor (cum laude) is automatic after reaching 32 points.
