28661 - Mechanics Applied to Machines T-A

Academic Year 2019/2020

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Engineering Management (cod. 0925)

Learning outcomes

From the theoretical foundations of mechanics, the course provides the basic concepts and methods for the functional study of the machines, with particular reference to the problems associated with the use and maintenance.

Course contents

Degrees of freedom of plane and spatial mechanisms. Mechanical efficiency in direct and retrograde motion. Elements of static fundamental equations. Static analytical and static graphics.
Tribology. Frictional sliding and rolling friction.
Work of friction forces. Elementary theory of sliding friction. Rolling friction. Wear. Mechanical efficiency of the prismatic pair and the inclined plane: direct and retrograde motion.
Mechanical efficiency of revolute pairs: analytical and graphical determination. Analytical calculation of the mechanical efficiency of the twisted pair. Distribution of contact pressure. Ball bearings and roller bearings: the calculation of the moment of balance. Balance in the automotive wheel.
Elements of kinematics of rigid bodies in the plan: instant center of rotation. Graphic determination of instantaneous centers of rotation in planar mechanisms.

Teaching methods

Both theoretical and exercise lessons are performed in the classroom.

Assessment methods

The exam is oral: all that has been done in the classroom, included the exercise lessons, can be verified. In order to participate to the oral verification, the day of the exam session the candidate must bring a notebook reporting some exercises (highlighted during the course) performed with personalized data.
