Learning outcomes

The course will focus on the political, military and economic reflections on peace and war of some of the most important thinkers of modernity. At the end of the course students will also know the most important “isms” of contemporary and modern political debate on peace and war.

Course contents

The course will be based on the analysis of history of modern and contemporary political thought from the perspective of the political concept of peace and war.

The course will not only focus on the texts based on the political concept of peace and war by the main Western political thinkers: from Machiavelli to More, from Erasmus to Grotius, from Vitoria to Gentili, from Hobbes to Locke, from Montesquieu to Rousseau, from Kant to Hegel, from Constant to Tocqueville, from Clausewitz to Saint-Simon, from Comte to Marx,  from Nietzsche to Weber, from Lenin to Schumpeter, from Schmitt to Kelsen, from Morgenthau to Wight, from Aron to Foucault.

STUDENTS NOT ATTENDING THE COURSE

The readings to be prepared by students who choose not to attend the course are partially different from those to be prepared by the attending ones. For this reason non-attending students are kindly requested to contact and meet the instructor in due time and at least once before the exam.

20 lectures of 2 hours each


Assessment methods

In-class exam. The exam is aimed at assessing the student’s level of knowledge of some of the most important topics addressed by the course, as well as her/his ability to critically analyse and verbally articulate them and her/his level of understanding of the texts.The ability of the student to achieve a coherent and comprehensive understanding of the topics addressed by the course, to critically assess them and to use an appropriate language will be evaluated with the highest grades. Gaps and deficiencies in one or more of those components will result in lower grades. The absence of a minimum level of knowledge of the contents of the course, combined with inadequate language and lack of critical abilities will result in a fail grading.
