Learning outcomes
This Laboratory analyses the current transition of television from traditional 20th century systems (public service and commercial broadcasting) to early 21st century's (pay-tv and digital multichannel tv) and to today Over-the-Top Video that may be disrupting its organization, production and distribution models as well as the relation of television with mass politics and government practices.
Course contents
Public service broadcasting in its historical context, its current status and mandate, its legitimacy and future potential also in relation with its financing through an obligatory licence fee.
Commercial television fundamental features faced with fragmentation of audiences and diminishing ability to perform from the pointof view of adveretising investors.
Pay-television model (HBO, Canal+, Sky...) in their evolution vis-a-vis distribution technology (analogue, digital satellite, dtt, online) and resource management againts new competitive pressures from digital-only internet driven newcomers.
Over-the-Top internet driven newcomers (Netflix, Hulu...)

Teaching methods
This Laboratory is based on frontal lessons concerning the diffferent models of broadcasting and theri evolution, the key issue of copyrights, the EEC audiovisual policies. Students will be asked to prepare and present works of research on the key factors determining the evolution towards the future of television.
Assessment methods
Active participation to the Laboratory and presentation activities is required for a minimum of 70% of global time (5 meetings over seven)
