Learning outcomes

Analysis of the main classical sociological theories, relevant for a sociological view of the law. Study, in a sociological perspective, of some of the main issues connected to the relation between men and their culture.

Course contents

The course will consist of two parts.

The general part of the course will be devoted

- to the most important theories which composed a sociological view of the law, to the main sociological perspectives and

- to the topic of the empirical research.

The special part of the course will be devoted to a confrontation with the genesis of the "science of civilization" in the fourteenth century Islam.

a) General part:

FOR STUDENTS NOT ATTENDING CLASSES: R. Treves, Sociologia del diritto, Einaudi, Torino, 2002, capp. I, II (excluding par. 11), III (only paragraphs 12 e 13), IV (excluding par. 25 e 27), V (only par. 28), VII, e IX (only par. 51 e 54).

FOR STUDENTS ATTENDING AT LEAST 3/4 OF THE COURSE, it will be possible to study the notes of course, together with the integrations delivered during the classes.

b) Special part:

Reading: Annalisa Verza, Ibn Khaldun. Le origini arabe della sociologia della civilizzazione e del potere, Franco Angeli, Milano, 2018 (last chapter excluded).

Teaching methods

Frontal teaching. The teacher will also use powerpoint slides and, if the case, films.

Attending classes is not necessary to be examined, but only students who attended at leat 3/4 of the classes will be admitted to the alternative assessment methods (see below).

Assessment methods

For students not attending the classes: The student will be asked to discuss some of the relevant topics of the course, in order to assess not only the knowledge of the discipline, but also the methodology and capacity for criticism developed by the student. The students will also be asked to comment the material of the special part.

Students regularly attending at least 3/4 of the classes will have the possibility to be examined according to an alternative method, involving first of all a written test (duration: more or less 1 hour) on the topics of the general part, and then the production of an essay for the topics of the special part. The details for this alternative exams will be given during the course.

The final grade will be determined balancing the results obtained in every step of the exam. In every case, beyonf the knowledge of the program, also the accuracy and and good articolation of the exposition, and the capacity to handle the topics, will be evaluated.
