Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student has the knowledge related to - types of alterations determined by the exploitation of the resources of the sea; - technical-scientific tools for the quantification of alterations, for control and management - principles and methods for the conservation and protection of marine environments - monitoring and evaluation methods.

Course contents

Recalls on the main marine habitats and on the problems of loss and alteration of the habitats determined by the exploitation of marine resources. Presentation of reference frameworks related to the management of the marine and coastal environment. Definition of ecological quality, protection of habitats under the European directives on marine habitats (WFD and MSFD).

Teaching methods

The course is organised in frontal teaching, exercises in the computer lab for setting up the experimental design and statistical analysis, discussion of scientific papers.

Assessment methods

The final exam will be done together for the two teaching modules.
In addition to the evaluation of the notions, the critical approach will be evaluated in the analysis and in the discussion of the case studies.

Teaching tools

Classroom lessons. Practicals in the computer lab for the analysis of study cases based on data collected from Experimental Ecology Laboratory. Discussion of a scientific papera from international journals.
