37596 - Architectural Design T

Academic Year 2018/2019

  • Moduli: Andreina Milan (Modulo 1) Massimiliano Cantalupo (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Ravenna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Building Engineering (cod. 9199)

Learning outcomes

The course - commencing from the presentation of the entire evolutionary process of the architecture design, from concept to creation - tackles specific contents of urban design, meant as autonomous planning scale in which the relation between architecture and city is made explicit. The analyses of theoretical and design production around this theme will allow highlighting some general features of development of the architectural thought about the city.

Course contents

The aim of the course is to provide methodological, critical, operational tools necessary to tackle planning issues inherent to the disciplinary expertise of civil engineers from a polytechnic standpoint, within the construction supply chain. Planning themes will be analysed through objective and performance terms, identifying and clarifying qualities, opportunities and operational limits during classes, practical exercises and on campus presentations by experts.

The contents of classes respond to the needs of providing a valid theoretical support to ordinary issues of integration in the urban areas considered. In particular, basic principles will be provided for functional, technical and construction evaluations in compliance with Environmental and Energetic Best Practices.

Practical exercises will be accountable to the notions taught in terms of evaluation and application and will be carried out in local areas object of urban and residential regeneration. The analyses will appertain old and new buildings projects highlighting their peculiarities and opportunities on a multi-scalar and multi-disciplinary level (regarding planning and technological plant solutions)

The analyses and corrective proposals may include adaptation and/or integration works through energy and functional retrofitting, accompanied by possible additive or reductive works correlated to current regulations

Readings/Bibliography

Classes will be held by the lecturer and external experts. Powerpoint presentations will be provided immediately after the classes and uploaded online in the Alma Mater Studiorum websites.

Students will refer to the books in the list below for a thorough examination of functional and technological matters. Other books will be pointed out by the lecturer during classes and seminars.

Teaching methods

The course articulates in phases of studio alternated by the delivery of three milestone driven assignments (S.A.L. Stato di Avanzamento Lavori), which will enable students and their teams to evaluate the acquisition and progress of individual and group disciplinary competences

Assessment methods

The final exam will be based on the assignments produced during the practical exercises and on the graphic, analytic and editing format provided by the lecturer. The assignments will be on paper and electronic formats [A0 tables, illustrative reports, memos, fact-finding charts of materials, product profiling, A4, A3, A0 paper format. Files: .pptx, .PDF, CD Rom].
