Academic Year 2018/2019

  • Moduli: Luca Guardigli (Modulo 1) Giorgia Predari (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Civil Engineering (cod. 8888)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course and after passing the final exam, the student will have the basic knowledge relating to the construction of buildings , starting from static, constructive and environmental principles, up to the definition of the building elements. His skills will concern both the issues related to new buildings, and interventions on existing assets.

Course contents

Requirements/Prior knowledge

A prior knowledge and understanding of mathematic, physic, chemistry and technical representation of the spatial objects is required to attend with profit this course.

Fluent spoken and written Italian is a necessary pre-requisite: all lectures and tutorials, and all study material will be in Italian.

Course Contents

The course is divided into three main sections.
The first section (A) is dedicated to the fundamental knowledge and includes the following topics:
1. Construction materials.
2. The static principles in building construction (the trilithic construction, the vaulting construction and the framed construction) and their development in the construction history.
The second section (B) relates to the most common construction procedures and the main components, and includes the following topics:
3. The bearing wall construction.
4. The construction in reinforced concrete.
5. The steel and wood construction.
6. Foundations.
7. The floors.
8. The roofs.
The third section (C) is dedicated to the analysis of existing masonry buildings and applications to evaluate and improve their safety against seismic actions. It includes the following topics:
9. Evolution of the seismic rules for interventions on existing buildings.
10. The importance of the quality of the masonry and construction techniques.
11. The first and the second mode of damage.
12. The techniques for the seismic strengthening.

Teaching methods

The course is conducted through classroom lectures and tutorials at the educational workshop Le-Do.
In the lessons we discuss the principles and fundamental theoretical and practical knowledge.
During the tutorials, carried out at the educational workshop Le-do, are illustrated by the manufacturing industry, the main construction systems, with particular reference to environmental sustainability concepts.

Assessment methods

Achievements will be assessed by the means of a final exam. This is based on an analytical assessment of the "expected learning outcomes" described above.

In order to properly assess such achievement the examination is composed of written session, which consist of a test, duration 2 hours, composed of 3 questions usually refer to each of the three sections of the course contents.

Higher grades will be awarded to students who demonstrate an organic understanding of the subject, a high ability for critical application, and a clear and concise presentation of the contents.

To obtain a passing grade, students are required to at least demonstrate a knowledge of the key concepts of the subject, some ability for critical application, and a comprehensible use of technical language.

A failing grade will be awarded if the student shows knowledge gaps in key-concepts of the subject, inappropriate use of language, and/or logic failures in the analysis of the subject. Furthermore, the failing grade will be awarded if the students will have the insufficient evaluation in two of the three questions.

Teaching tools

The lectures are conducted through slides projected on video.
The slides of the lectures are available to students during the lessons.
