29928 - Laboratory of Process Engineering T

Academic Year 2018/2019

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering (cod. 8887)

Learning outcomes

The course is intended to give the knowledge, the methodologies and the tools for the quantitative analysis of Chemical Engineering processes

Course contents

All lessons will be held in Italian. It is therefore necessary to have a good understanding of the Italian language in order to be able to profitably follow the course and to use the teaching material provided during the lessons.

Required knowledge:

Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry knowledge acquired in higher education.

The content of the course is:

1) Unit of measurement units SI

2) Errors, Accuracy and Uncertainties

3) Physical principles and apparatus for the transportation mass, energy and momentum.

4) Models of chemical plants

5) Mass balance for reactive and non reactive systems, degree of Advancement of reaction

6) Conversion, Yield, Selectivity

Readings/Bibliography

Teaching materials distributed during lessons.

Recommended book is:

R.M. Felder, R.W. Rousseau "Elementary principless of chemical processes", John Wiley & Sons

Teaching methods

Direct lessons, with audio-visual media.

It is advisable not to print the material well in advance of the lessons because the teacher may make changes before and during lessons.

The main equipment for the exchange of quantity of mass. motion, and energy will be presented.

Material balances will be performed for most common chemical processes.

The teaching material is not a substitute for the reference book but is complementary to them, and is a guide for the selection and understanding of the topics analysed in the course.

Assessment methods

The exam ensures the acquisition of the expected knowledge by means of a written test, based on a three-hour test with multiple questions involving mass balance, determination of independent reactions, and simple application of Chemical Engineering apparati.

The exam will be awarded to students who will demonstrate operational skills in relation to the key concepts taught in teaching.

A failure may be due to insufficient knowledge of key concepts or too limited ability in applying them.

Teaching tools

The teaching material presented at the lesson will be made available to the student electronically.

Username and password are reserved for students enrolled at the University of Bologna.
