78463 - High Voltage Engineering M

Academic Year 2018/2019

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Electrical Energy Engineering (cod. 8611)

Learning outcomes

The Course provides a deeper insight into the technological and engineering solutions adopted in power systems in the presence of high voltage and high electric fields. At the end of the course students are able to understand how lightning and switching surges affect high voltage systems, and possess the knowledge of the main features of the devices used in the high voltage field: overhead and cable lines; insulators; surge arresters; switchgears; DC, AC and impulse high voltage sources; voltage dividers. The students are also getting the basics of insulation coordination and testing. Particular emphasis is put on High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission systems, both from the line and from the converter station viewpoint.

Course contents

In summary, the topics that are treated during the course are the following:

1st Part

  • Lightning overvoltages and the relevant tools for reducing them, as well as their effects.
  • Switching overvoltages and the relevant tools for reducing them, as well as their effects.
  • High voltage circuit breakers.

2nd Part

  • Lightning overvoltages and the relevant tools for reducing them, as well as their effects.
  • High voltage testing facilities for high voltage direct current tests, for high voltage alternate current tests and for high voltage impulse tests.
  • Insulation coordination.
  • Fundamentals about the measurement and the calculation methods of electrical and magnetic fields from high voltage apparatus.
  • HVDC transmission systems. Converter types. Overhead lines. Cable lines. Main issues.
