78455 - Predictive Maintenance for Electrical Infrastructures M

Academic Year 2018/2019

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Electrical Energy Engineering (cod. 8611)

Also valid for Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Electrical Energy Engineering (cod. 8611)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students are able to choose the most appropriate diagnostic techniques for a specific apparatus, and are able to start using the techniques by themselves, interpreting measurement results. Their expertise is based on the knowledge that they acquire on (a) the typical failure modes of high and medium voltage equipment; (b) the diagnostic techniques most commonly used to identify local defects (weak points in the insulation systems) and bulk degradation; emphasis will be given to the physical basis of these techniques and their limitations; (c) the basic information regarding the use of artificial intelligence techniques in diagnosis and (d) the qualification of insulation systems as a prerequisite to ensure proper reliability levels.

Course contents

  1. Dielectric spectroscopy as a diagnostic tool.
  2. Application of the fuzzy logic for the identification of partial discharge sources.
  3. Structure of power cables insulation systems. Typical failure modes of medium and high voltage power cables. Water trees. Diagnostic through tan-delta measurements. Partial discharge detection and monitoring strategies.
  4. Low voltage and medium voltage rotating machine insulation systems: insulating materials and processing technologies. Other parts of the insulation system: corona-protection tapes, stress control systems, bracing systems. Aging and degradation of the electrical insulation system. Diagnostic of rotating machines based on bulk techniques. Partial discharge detection and analysis of medium voltage machines. Issues in inverter-fed rotating machines.
  5. Transformer insulation system. Thermal aging of the insulation system. Bulk detection of thermal degradation and moisture absorption. Dissolved gas analysis. Partial discharge detection in power transformers. Health index.
  6. Environmental issues of insulation systems: selection of materials and manufacturing issues, end-of-life processing.
