Learning outcomes

At the end of the seminar the student will: - understand the role of the image in the process of understanding social reality; acquire the tools to represent a sociological concept through the use of images; - be able to prepare a paper agreed with the teacher regarding the topics of the seminars.

Course contents

During the seminar, some of the main topics addressed by visual sociology will be considered. The seminar includes a first theoretical module which explains the basic principles of the discipline and the techniques to study different situations addressed. The second module is devoted to the application of Visual Sociology: students will be asked to test the techniques learned in the first part of the seminar with a simulation of field research.

During the seminar further readings will also suggested related to the topics discussed.

Teaching methods

Lectures and experiments of the techniques learned.

Assessment methods

The criteria for the acquisition of credits are as follows:
1) the frequency to at least 2/3 of the lectures (12 on 18).
2) Final exam on the topics discussed during the seminar and creation of a visual product agreed with the teacher.
The credits shall be registered by Prof. Maria Rescigno during his examination sessions.

Teaching tools

Part of the seminar will take place using the facilities of the Multimedia Lab of the Department of Sociology and Business Law where there are:
- two units of audio-video, in a Windows environment and in a MAC environment;
- two digital video-cameras;
- two digital photo-cameras
