Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student knows the main aspects of the beginning phases of two Finno-Ugric languages, the history of these languages and the culture of these populations. Moreover he is introduced to the basic tools for textual criticism in order to follow their changements over the centuries.

Course contents

Identity and literature, the Kalevala, the Kalevipoeg and the ancient literature of the Hungarians

During the course we will analyze some of the most important literary works of the ugrofinnici peoples. Through the reading of passages from the Finnish epic, (the Kalevala), and from the Estonian one (the Kalevipoeg), the formation of the literary and cultural identity of these peoples will be identified. In a comparative perspective, ancient and popular Hungarian literature will be examined.

Direct lessons by the teacher, seminars.

Assessment methods

Final assessment of learning is based on an oral exam which focuses on the topics discussed in class. During the oral exam the methodological and critical skills acquired by the students are evaluated: they will be invited to analyse the texts discussed during the course and those read independently.During the course it will be possible for students to present brief written papers on a specific theme, which can be assessed positively at the end of the examination.
